Pigeon Impact Photo Contest

Pigeons and the feeding of pigeons continue to be a concern in many parts of Willowdale, impacting public spaces, sidewalks, parks, and neighbouring properties.

To help us better understand the scope of the issue, we're launching the Willowdale Pigeon Impact Photo Contest. Residents are invited to help identify locations where pigeon activity is creating concerns related to:

Excessive droppings
Property damage
Public cleanliness
Sidewalk maintenance
Health and sanitation concerns
Impacts to businesses and public spaces

Upload a photo, identify the location, and tell us about the issue. Community members can support submissions they agree with by upvoting them.

The results will be compiled and be part of a poster campaign to educate those who feed pigeons.

How to Participate

Step 1: Take a photo of pigeon-related issues in Willowdale, such as excessive droppings, property damage, large congregations of pigeons, or the impacts of pigeon feeding.

Step 2: Upload your photo and tell us where it was taken and how the issue is affecting the area.

Step 3: Review submissions from other residents and support the photos that best capture the impact of the problem by upvoting them.

The most supported submissions will help us identify problem areas and may be used as part of future public education and awareness efforts regarding pigeon feeding and its impacts on our community.

Help us document the issue and work together to keep Willowdale clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

marni ugar14 hours ago There are wildfires burning today, July 15, caused not by pigeons. As usual, humans are causing the damage and the pigeons are paying the price. Birds have sensitive respiratory systems and suffer the most with poor air quality. They also suffer the most because they get tangled in our litter. Lily Cheng could end this farce of a contest. Instead, she has taken down all social media posts and deleted all of our comments to support pigeons. Oh Lily, we are not going away. Our protests will continue as long as you do with this contest.

Shove It11 hours ago Lily Cheng encourages the harassment and demonization of urban pigeons by portraying them as filthy pests instead of living animals deserving humane treatment. It promotes cruelty, disgust, and hostility toward wildlife rather than responsible education or humane coexistence. Absolutely shameful conduct from an elected official. Apparently, Lily Cheng has no more meaningful initiatives to pursue than whipping up contempt for pigeons!

Instead of trying to attack pigeons with your distasteful and hateful project, maybe try to be an actual leader and show people that we need to coexist with eachother. Humans are a cancer to this planet, we're they ones causing damage and leaving nothing behind for future generations. Maybe shift your focus on issues that could benefit ALL the people who voted for you, not just some weirdo that keeps changing her name so she can troll and like her own posts. And one last thing Lily, when your team decides to delete posts that do not fit this hateful narrative of yours, you're telling people exactly who you are. Hiding how the majority of people feel about this initiative is not democratic, shame on you and whoever is helping you.

Sandra Schnurr4 hours ago Humans need to learn to live in harmony with our fellow creatures, including urban wildlife.This is a screenshot from a video I took, that shows the intelligence of pigeons and their capacity for empathy. Two pigeons were contemplating the dead body of a third pigeon. They repeatedly touched the body and seemed to be trying to elicit a reaction. Only after several minutes of apparently trying to rouse the dead pigeon did they finally give up and fly away.

In Germany, instead of pitting citizens against each other in this uncivilized way, and putting resources into fighting an un-winnable battle against nature, they install public dovecotes where the feeding bans can be lifted, which draws the pigeons away from private residences at an 80% success rate. This makes everybody happy, it keeps the pigeons away from property owners who hate birds, and keeps them in a centralized place where populations can be humanely managed, and those of us who enjoy them can volunteer to help do so in these spaces.That is a solution. Not whatever the heck this is.

Are you willing to poison birds to get rid of them to appease a very few people? Or are you willing to invest in perhaps a pilot project for dovecotes? Maybe you could be the person to lead such an initiative and start the ball rolling in Canada? But that requires more work than asking people to post pictures depicting pigeons in a negative way.
