PB 2024: Share Your Ideas, Newtonbrook West!

The Participatory Budgeting Idea Collection will take place through both in-person events and online submissions via our community engagement portal- Willowdaleactionhub.ca. To increase the likelihood of your project idea moving forward in the PB process, we encourage you to take ownership of your idea by becoming an in-person Project Champion. When submitting your idea online, please indicate your willingness to serve as a Project Champion in the comment section to ensure your idea has a better chance to be considered in the PB process.

Who is a PROJECT CHAMPION? A Project Champion is a participant who submits an idea through the Participatory Budgeting (PB) process and collaborates closely with Councillor Cheng's staff to turn their idea into reality from start to finish. One of the key responsibilities of a Project Champion is to mobilize their idea in the community to gather maximum support.

You will need to SIGN UP on www.willowdaleactionhub.ca to submit your IDEA in the 'Share Your Ideas Newtonbrook West' folder.

IMPORTANT: Please mention in the description of your IDEA- " I will be the Project Champion for this idea"

We played at many City courts and Hendon Park's wait time is the longest.Suggestions: night light with a switch. if people can play at night, those who usually go during rush hour can play later. pickleball lines (painting pickleball lines on the tennis court). increase the number of tennis court. The big empty grass is usually neglected and unused. We may be able to double the number of courts.

Bernice Wu2 years ago Hendon Park new playground structure needed improved lines to indicate hydro line bike path passes in front of the playground and softball diamond (many kids run across the bike path because it's beside the playground) crosswalk in front of Hendon Park entrance (crossing onto Kensington Ave.) re-paving of tennis courts which are uneven and falling apart. The ball doesn't even bounce properly and it's flooded after rainfall near the fence door so you can't even get in (see photo) Edithvale Park can create pickleball courts in many of the unused green spaces (behind the parking lot, where Holcolm Rd meets Edithvale Dr off-leash dog area more lighting more signs near the basketball courts to indicate no smoking (esp. pot) or vaping

Aaron Z2 years ago This idea was presented at the Newtonbrook West PB Idea Collection Meeting and received additional 12 likes. Project Champion: Z, Aaron. Rationale: 1.There is more than enough room if we replace the bowls area which is never used for its intended purpose2.There is enough length to supply 2 regulation pickleball courts while still having enough to widen adjacent path3.The sport is rapidly growing and engaging a very diverse crowd of all ages4.The indoor pickleball programs are already at capacity with huge wait times which have turned off many players5.Drawing lines on the adjacent tennis court would give the park 3 tennis courts and 3 pickleball courtsEstimated Costs: •Tennis court resurfacing and new acrylic surface: $100,000•Added pickleball lines: $5,000•Demolition and repurposing the bowls area: $20,000 (demolition) + $30,000 (site prep)•Installation of the 2 new pickleball courts: 2 x $40,000Total: $200,000-$250,000 which is roughly half of the Newtonbrook West budget (I believe the rest should be put towards improving community center facilities and possibly some Moore Park projects)

Elaine Goldenberg2 years ago Currently there is no lighting on the walking path(s) through Moore Park. So one cannot walk through the park in the evenings. Now that our days are getting shorter, we cannot use the park after 8pm. The park is also a main thoroughfare for students from Newtonbrook High going west to their homes. During fall and winter with it getting dark at 5pm, it will be very unsafe for students to walk through the park on the their way home. We need lights for all the people who use this popular park.

Additional like count of 9 received from Stephen Bloom's idea presentation at NB West Idea Collection meeting Tennis court at Moore Park needs upgrade. Can use more lighting, timer lights, new nets, resurfacing and marking. Can't be used in evenings due to no visibility. Comment below to suggest any other upgrades needed for the tennis court at Moore Park.
