Member since August 15, 2024

Resident of Yonge/Finch since 2022. I spend a lot of my free time eating/shopping in the NY downtown along Yonge, and running/cycling through the rest of Willowdale (yes, even in winter).

Lane narrowing and car traffic calming on Bishop Ave.

Harry Keess•9 months ago Bishop Avenue is currently an unsafe environment due to speeding and unsafe car drivers. Drivers disregard the posted 40km/hr limit and frequently cut off pedestrians trying to cross the street safely. They also put cyclists at risk who are forced onto the road due to the missing link in the Hydro trail at Yonge/Bishop. Drivers also ignore the stop sign at Bishop/Kenneth, never looking for pedestrians crossing on their way to the subway station or Bishop Park.I propose the following traffic measures for Bishop Avenue: Narrow the vehicle lanes and add speed humps. This would force drivers to slow down and pay more attention to their surroundings. Lanes could be narrowed via building out the curb or adding chicanes (see photo) and widening the existing sidewalk. Add curb bump-outs at the Bishop/Kenneth intersection, and add an all-way stop there. The curb bump-outs would force drivers to take turns at slower speeds, and would give more space for pedestrians to cross safely and visibly. The all-way stop would encourage drivers to accelerate less when approaching from Yonge or Willowdale. Disallow right turns on red at the Yonge/Bishop and Willowdale/Bishop intersections. There is currently a partial right on red restriction at the former. It should be added for all directions, particularly when turning NB onto Yonge from Bishop. This would make it illegal for drivers to coast through right turns and make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists trying to cross intersections safely. This is about more than just safety; it's about respect for other road users. Bad drivers act entitled to the road here, and adding improvements to make it safer for others may remind drivers that they are not the only ones with a right to get around safely.
