Sidewalk extension / sightline remediation at Finch pickup/dropoff access W of Yonge

Yang Yang S•5 months ago Currently, travelling eastbound across the Finch PU/DO as a cyclist is especially sketchy, due to the narrow sidewalk and mixing of pedestrians/cyclists and sightline blockages requiring vehicles to creep into the sidewalk to see past the bush. I either have to grab the brakes as vehicles creep too closely to me, or weave around the access queue when vehicles block the sidewalk altogether. I'm a decently confident cyclist but I can imagine it's a lot harder for a fresher cyclist to navigate these blockages.I understand that per the HTA, cyclists are technically not allowed to ride on the sidewalk. However, Turning left out onto Hendon and then coming back over at Yonge to access the Hydro downstream is equally dicey with all the traffic on Hendon throughout the day The majority of less confident cyclists tend to go with the sidewalk approach anyways Given that Hendon is well above the City's lane width minimums, it would be nice to either: Explore a permanent option to eliminate the underused north curbside on-on-street dropoff spaces to widen the north sidewalk into a MUP or bi-directional cycle track + sidewalk Explore an interim solution to eliminate sightline blockages looking west, while also setting back the stopbar to affirm intervisibility between motorists and cyclists Maybe even consider an on-street quick-build protected contraflow solution for cyclists? Although even I am a little sketched out by this idea

Move Yonge/Empress SE/SW corner pushbuttons closer to the crosswalks

Yang Yang S•5 months ago The southwest and southeast corner pedestrian pushbuttons to cross Empress are placed so far back from the intersection that sometimes, pedestrians are unaware that one exists, resulting in times where they assume that they don't need to push anything to cross and then have their pedestrian phase skipped altogether. This then prompts them to cross on the red hand anyways, which creates dangerous situations when the side street green terminates early. It would be great to figure out a way to move these pushbuttons closer to the crossings, much like what is done at Yonge and Church/Churchill

Eliminate negative turning offset at Yonge & Church/Churchill

Yang Yang S•5 months ago Currently when turning northbound left at Yonge and Churchill, it can get difficult to see past cars in the opposing southbound left turning lane due to the significant negative turn offset (see below and Lane Widths Guideline-Version 3.0-October, 2025 Section 2.4) and the uphill grade. It would be nice to align these turn lanes in a future project or renewal such that the offset is eliminated and sightlines are made much better. I currently turn at Ellerslie instead as a result.

Traffic signal optimization along Beecroft, Doris

Yang Yang S•5 months ago While generally minor compared to a lot of other concerns mapped already, I'd like to note that travelling along Beecroft and Doris can get frustrating at times during peak hours due to the number of consecutive red lights I would hit, as both a driver and cyclist. Given that the City runs a Signal Optimization (Coordination) Program across many routes in Toronto, it would be nice to have the same workflow applied to these two service roads to re-program in a green wave for better flow. This might also affirm the utility of these service roads by making them an even quicker north-south alternative to Yonge, which could result in potentially less vehicles needing to interact with pedestrians along Yonge, as well as less vehicles on Yonge in general [ which may also help with the success of Transform Yonge ;) ]
