. SMART CROSSWALKS WITH SENSORS — South Korea’s Proven Model

From "Share Your Project and Policy Ideas"

Go to the project

The problem: Intersections like Yonge/Sheppard and Yonge/Finch are dangerous because crossing times are fixed, regardless of how many people are waiting.

The solution: Crosswalks with thermal cameras and radar that detect pedestrian volume and automatically extend the walk signal.

The proof: South Korea deployed crosswalks embedded with thermal cameras, radar sensors, and responsive LED lighting. These systems detect pedestrian movement even in rain, fog, or darkness, and automatically trigger warning lights. The initiative led to significant reduction in vehicle speed near crosswalks and fewer collisions in pilot areas.

Ask: Request the City of Toronto install adaptive pedestrian signal timing at the five highest-risk intersections in Willowdale.
