Sidewalk should be made into a multi use path
From "Lets Talk Traffic Willowdale"
Go to the project
The sidewalk on the east side of Yonge near the Hwy 401 underpass should be made into a multi use path to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists. Cycling under the Hwy 401 is extremely dangerous on account of the high speed motor vehicle traffic (even though it is a 50 km/hr speed limit).

I ride my bike on the east sidewalk which takes me to the south side (where the cars exit off the 401 going east bound) into the York mills neighborhood. That’s the best way to go. Why would want anybody would want to go underneath along Young Street.

@John Zhu I agree that going directly on Yonge would not be the first choice of many cyclists, and it's typical to use the sidewalk that you and Peter are referring to. The Willowdale Community Bike Ride that is organised with Councillor Cheng's office also uses this sidewalk for their route. However, Chapter 950-201 C(2) of the Toronto Municipal Code states that “no person age 14 and older shall ride a bicycle on a sidewalk of any highway.” If we turn the sidewalk into a multiuse path, cyclists would legally be allowed to use it. I also think it would be helpful to widen the path a bit so it is easier to pass pedestrians, and there's less risk of a cyclist colliding with a pedestrian.

Hello:
I am one of the organizers of this event, and we will be holding it this coming Saturday May 16 - and yes, we'll be taking the sidewalk from Harrison Gardens to south of the Hwy 401. I have raised the issue here to have it made into a multi use path, though need to elevate it to a level to grab attention from the powers that be.

@Peter Low Hi Peter, thanks for organising the event again. I think that to plan a route by bike from Avondale southwards, both of the closest options available to cyclists put them in conflict with others. With the large group we have with the event, I would be concerned about taking Yonge southbound due to the potential conflict with drivers and I wouldn't want to anyone to be injured, maimed, or killed by a collision with a driver. On the flip side, it is technically not permitted in the City of Toronto for adults to cycle on a sidewalk, since this puts them at risk of a potential conflict or collision with a pedestrian. I am sure you are fully aware of this, hence you made this proposal to turn that sidewalk into a multiuse path, and I would like to see this proposal succeed to support future community cycling events and so that cyclists in our community don't have to choose between two suboptimal routes that put them in potential conflict with other people.
I'd also like to add that according to the City's Vision Zero education materials, a collision at 50 km/hr has a 85% likelihood of fatality for a vulnerable road user. So I agree that even though the speed limit is 50 km/hr, biking south on Yonge through the 401 underpass is hazardous.

I agree with this proposal. During the last Willowdale Community Ride in September that was organized by Councillor Cheng's office, we had a large group and took this sidewalk to start our journey south. When my partner and I are biking south to go to midtown or downtown, we also use this route because biking through the underpass on Yonge feels very unsafe.
