Ride the Loop, close the Gap: Finch hydro corridor trail crossing Yonge between Hendon and Bishop

From "PB 2026: Share Your Ideas, Willowdale East!"

I will be the Project Champion for this idea.

I recently rode my bike on part of the 72 km "Ride the Loop, Close the Gap" bike trail ride that was organized by the Toronto Community Bike Coalition. This was a full day event with the opportunity to see our beautiful city through the amazing trails and communities from downtown back to downtown. The ride loops through the Finch Hydro Trail in our neighbourhood. There are 9-10 small but significant gaps on the loop that are very dangerous, or not accessible by bike: one of them happens to be in our neighbourhood, which is the crossing between Bishop and Hendon, intersecting Yonge. Most cyclists ride on the sidewalk while others brave the road along with other cars and the TTC buses! It is confusing, unsafe, and someone unfamiliar with the area will easily get lost. I propose to take the lead to collaborate ideas to improve safety for everyone, and close the gap on this section of the trail.

This is an excellent idea. It will help connect our community east and west, and I’m sure make it safer and more possible for more people to make use of these trails. It’s so nice to have safe cycling paths separated from the road - for recreation and for commuting.

This is a great idea! The area around Yonge St is a mess with too much potential for bad interactions between trail users, pedestrians, and motor vehicles. Better infrastructure is sorely needed there.

I agree that we need a transformation to that part of Hendon & Bishop Ave leading into Yonge street. It is a disaster for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. I know there is a project to improve Hendon Ave: https://www.toronto.ca/community-people/get-involved/public-consultations/infrastructure-projects/street-improvement-projects-in-north-york-centre/road-safety-improvements-on-hendon-avenue/ There have been ideas to improve Bishop Ave, but I have yet to see anything come through.

The Hydro trail is a great place to ride but crossing Yonge is scary even for an adult like me. It can be so congested and unsafe there especially around rush hours it must be traumatic for kids! This is the only part of the Loop trail in our jurisdiction so let’s do this not just for ourselves but for the rest of the city, too.
