Remove Fencing on the Toronto Transit Commission - Finch East Commuter Lot

There are two proposals in one post.

Proposal #1

Proposal: Remove all the fencing and cement barriers that allow for pedestrians and cyclists to cross between Finch Station and the parking lot.

Background: Getting to or from Finch Station or Yonge Street onto the parking lot presents unnecessary hazards for pedestrians and cyclists due to a narrow sidewalk path. The removal of all the fencing and cement barriers seen in the photo above would create separation between the two groups and improve the flow of movement and visibility (eliminating blind spots). This proposal would support Vision Zero in mitigating any injuries that could occur. Additionally, removing 2 metres of the taxi fence next to the station so that cyclists do not need to swerve into the sidewalk by the station.

Proposal #2

Proposal: Removal of bushes at the TTC Finch Station passenger pick-up and increased size of the sidewalk path along Hendon Ave entering Hendon Park.

Background: Cross from Yonge Street into Hendon Ave, the sidewalk path is very narrow, which is a hazard for pedestrians and casual cyclists. Motorists are often driving out from the TTC Finch Station passenger pick-up because they cannot see incoming traffic, pedestrians or cyclists. This presents risk for pedestrians and cyclists having to move around the vehicle into oncoming traffic or behind the vehicle, which does not support the goals of Vision Zero. Removing the bushes (as much as I do love nature) would be vital in removing blind spots for motorists and ensuring they stop to allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely to or from Hendon Park.

Additionally, increasing the size of the sidewalk would greatly improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists by providing adequate space amongst both groups and would connect much more smoothly along the Finch Hydro Corridor.
