There is a wonderful public space on the north side of the street.
Having a crosswalk mid-block would make this area accessible for those exiting the subway and walking past it to enjoy it.
Currently, this space is only of use if it is your destination, or you backtrack while walking in the neighbourhood.
This crosswalk is a missing connection in the public realm.

If you actually read the article you shared, it says that mid-block crossings, without markings or signals, are especially dangerous.
It then explains that adding markings and signals has greatly reduced accidents. Which is exactly what is being asked for here.

Seems excessive given how close the existing intersection is. The money can go to more other projects more urgent or impacting more people.
