Enforcing vacancy tax on homes in our neighborhood

From "Share your ideas or views!"

Go to the project

I know this is a touchy subject. But with all the housing shortages, we have in Toronto and the challenges for the city to meet the budget spending. I think we need to re-look at how the vacancy taxes enforced.

Could there be a possible incentives for taxpayers to report on homeowners or corporations not paying the vacancy tax?

I know of one home in our neighborhood 132 byng. Avenue. The house has been vacant since it was acquired in 2017 and rebuilt with a massive home. No one‘s living there and the properties unkept.

this house could easily be a home to two families. However, a corporation owns the home and is taking valuable housing for people in Toronto.

I would love to hear peoples thoughts on this subject.

They now have a lease sign up for the house. The outstanding question is whether the investment company has paid the City of Toronto what is owed over 250k the past four years. I’ve been unable to get any information on this—apparently, it’s considered a privacy issue, which is frankly frustrating.

I completely agree. I also noticed this is a common issue with larger deverlopers where blocks of detached homes are bought out and left vacant/torn down for years without breaking ground (Examples: Inez court where detached homes have been boarded up and left empty as far back as 2014 & north east of Yonge/Byng intersection since 2017 as per Google maps ).

@J H my neighbor told me now there’s a for sale sign being ready to be posted at 132 byng. Hopefully the city will enforce the bylaw and have the investment company who owns the property pay the tax which is greatly needed to deal with our house in crisis in the city of Toronto.
